JAPFA Hosts FIDE-Rated International Chess Tournament Again, Aiming to Foster New Grandmasters

15 May 2026

Jakarta, May 15, 2026 – PT Japfa Comfeed Indonesia Tbk (JAPFA), in collaboration with PB PERCASI (Indonesian Chess Association), is once again organizing the JAPFA International FIDE-Rated Tournament 2026, which will take place over five days from May 22 to 26, 2026, at The Tavia Hotel Heritage, Central Jakarta. This annual tournament is aimed at sharpening the skills of Indonesia’s young chess players and helping them improve their Elo ratings to accelerate the attainment of international titles, including the Grandmaster title. The tournament brings together top-class players from various countries, including those holding Grandmaster and International Master titles.

Rachmat Indrajaya, Director of Corporate Affairs at JAPFA stated, “Indonesia is not lacking in talented chess players; rather, we lack international platforms within the country. The JAPFA International FIDE-Rated Tournament 2026 is specifically designed as a catalyst. Our goal is clear: to accelerate the emergence of a new generation of Indonesian Grandmasters who are ready to make the nation proud.”

The tournament adopts a FIDE-rated system, allowing participants to earn official Elo rating points recognized by the world chess federation. The competition is divided into two main categories: the Open Category, designated for players with a minimum Elo rating of 2000, and the Challenger Category, which provides opportunities for players with an Elo rating below 2000 to compete and further develop their experience.

H. Agustiar Sabran SI.Kom, Chairman of PB PERCASI stated, “The JAPFA FIDE-Rated Tournament is a key event that we closely support to ensure our young chess players can become the front line of Indonesia’s chess future through structured and sustainable development programs. We hope this tournament will serve as a golden opportunity for young players to challenge themselves against top international competitors and to accumulate FIDE points, ultimately leading to the attainment of International Master and Grandmaster titles.”

The organizing committee has prepared a total prize pool of IDR 180 million for the winners. Registration fees remain the same as in the previous year, adjusted according to participants’ Elo ratings. The registration fee is set at IDR 150,000 for players with ratings below 2000, IDR 125,000 for ratings between 2000–2199, and IDR 100,000 for ratings between 2200–2399. Meanwhile, players with an Elo rating above 2400 are exempt from registration fees.

Through this initiative, it is expected that wider opportunities will be created for Indonesian chess players to achieve outstanding performance, while also enhancing Indonesia’s position on the global chess stage. The tournament is envisioned to serve as a catalyst for the emergence of a new generation of Indonesian Grandmasters who will bring pride to the nation at the international level.

The JAPFA FIDE-Rated 2025 tournament is designed as a key platform to help participants enhance their skills, improve their Elo ratings, and achieve international titles from FIDE. Previously, Indonesian chess players often had to travel abroad to pursue international titles or gain Elo points. With the presence of the JAPFA FIDE-Rated tournament, local players now have the opportunity to achieve such milestones in their home country.
